When you are looking for the right CBD oil, you may have seen that there is pure CBD options as well as full spectrum. Full spectrum CBD hemp oil has more cannabinoids in addition to CBD. One of the cannabinoids being CBG.
What Is CBG?
Cannabigerol (CBG) is a cannabinoid found in the cannabis plant like THC and CBD. This cannabinoid is non-intoxicating and is considered to be a minor cannabinoid because it is present in less than 1% of cannabis strains. What’s interesting about this cannabinoid is that THC and CBD both start out as CBG in the cannabis plant.
The cannabis plant produces CBGA which is eventually broken down by specific enzymes when the plant is exposed to ultraviolet light or heat which turns the CBGA into THCA and CBDA. If the strain of cannabis has more THC or CBD, it has less CBG and vice versa.
CBG And Glaucoma
Your eye structures have a lot of cannabinoid receptors that bind to cannabinoids. Studies have shown that CBG may be very effective in helping with glaucoma because of its ability to reduce intraocular pressure.
CBG And Inflammation
Cannabis has been well known for its ability to reduce inflammation, both THC and CBD have shown to cause a large reduction in swelling and pain. When studying inflammatory bowel disease in rodent models, CBG showed to also have anti-inflammatory effects.
CBG And Neuroprotection
Neurodegenerative diseases have also gotten a lot of attention from scientists researching cannabis. In 2015, a study with CBG showed that the cannabinoid has the ability to protect neurons in mice that have Huntington’s disease which is a neurodegenerative disease.
CBG And Cancer
Cannabis has been getting a lot of good publicity with its cancer-fighting abilities. CBG is just another cannabinoid that may aid the battle. Studies have shown that the cannabinoid CBG block receptors that cause cancer cell growth. CBG was shown to inhibit the growth of colorectal cancer cells in mice in the study.
CBG And Bacteria
MRSA, or Staph infection, is a big problem because it is often resistant to antibiotics. Studies have shown that CBG is an effective antibacterial agent, particularly with MRSA. Scientists have known that cannabis may be a solution to bacterial infections, but it wasn’t until recently that they figured out which cannabinoids play the strongest role.
CBG And Appetite
Cachexia happens when a patient becomes weak, loses muscle, and has severe weight loss due to a chronic illness. A study recently released in 2017 showed that a form of CBG was effective in stimulating the appetite of rodents.
CBG And Muscle Contractions
Bladder contractions are a common symptom in bladder dysfunction disorders. When researchers looked to see how five different cannabinoids helped with bladder contractions, CBG showed to be the most effective for these muscle contractions.
