CBD for Eczema
If you’ve ever had eczema as a kid, or if you have it now, you know just how annoying and painful it can be. And you aren’t alone, over 30 million Americans suffer from some form of eczema. We don’t know why or how you get eczema, except we know genetics and environment have something to do with it. But what we do know, is how to treat eczema and find relief through a natural chemical called Cannabidiol (CBD).
What Is Eczema?
Eczema is best known for being irritated patches of flesh that get red, itchy, and can even bust open and ooze puss or blood. At its most severe cases, in the most inconvenient spots, it can make life very difficult to function in. Imagine trying to open a pickle jar with blistered hands, not a fun time.
The most common place for eczema in children is their cute little cheeks. Coming in second with the best place for eczema to find a home is inside your elbow and knee creases, on your hands, and your scalp. Eczema can be found all over the body in forms of red skin, bumps, flaking skin, or cracks in your skin.
As children get older, eczema can go away. However, some report that it stays with them their whole life, comes back after being gone for years, and can even come back in a different form of eczema. Even if you are an adult who has never even had the skin disease, you can find yourself developing symptoms.

CBD Treatment for Eczema
Effective CBD topical ointments can help with the treatment of eczema, and are different than your average steroid cream or pain reliever. The problem with many topical ointments used for eczema is that they can only treat the symptoms affecting skin. They might reduce inflammation for a short period of time and make the itching go away - yet the eczema always stays. Some may even find that over time these creams stop working as our bodies build up a tolerance.
When researching the endocannabinoid system's CBD and skin health, scientists found that the endocannabinoid system actually has the ability to help your skin cells regrow at the proper speed, helping your body have normal immune responses and causing your skin cells to live longer. When the endocannabinoid system isn't functioning correctly, you can get painful and annoying symptoms of several diseases, one of these is eczema.
CBD works by regulating the endocannabinoid system, which in turn starts to regulate your whole body, including problems that surface on your skin. In a study related to cannabinoids and eczema, they watched 2,456 patients that were given a topical cream that had cannabinoids in it. Palmitoylethanolamide (PEA), which doesn’t interact with the CB1 and CB2 receptors; still interacts with the endocannabinoid system.
Of the 2,456 patients under watch, every single one of them noticed reduced eczema symptoms from CBD. Doctors watching over their disease reported symptoms reducing by an average of 58.6%. Patients also reported getting better sleep throughout the study. Most of the patients decided to stop using their old topical cream, and there was even a 62% decrease in needing the cream after the end of the study, which was only 38 days.
While Palmitoylethanolamide (PEA) isn’t actually in CBD, it is already in our bodies. What CBD does is it regulates our body's natural chemistry, helping PEA become stronger and more effective. It not only helps PEA, it also pumps up anandamide (AEA), which is partly responsible for pain regulation. This helps give you relief while PEA is calming your skin and CBD is telling your body how to work correctly.
In the study mentioned previously, the ages that were observed were from 2 years old to 70. This means that this medication is safe for your sensitive young or older skin, which is a good thing because that is where you need it. There are many topical creams that you can choose from, each packed with nutrient rich and medicinal CBD.
