How Much CBD Should You Give Your Dog?

Published on

CBD oil is becoming popular with pet owners because of its wide range of potential that extends to our furry friends. Though CBD hemp oil has shown in studies to be well tolerated with one of the most attractive side-effect profiles, you should still be cautious when giving anything new to your dog.

It can be difficult to gauge your dog’s reaction since they can’t communicate verbally with us, but animals do show signs that you can watch out for when taking any pet medications.

Common Dog Side- Effects to Medication

Vomiting and diarrhea

This can happen when a dog is adjusting to the medication. But when it persists, it could be aggravating their stomach or intestines. If you find blood in their stool or vomit, then they could have developed ulcers from the medicine. This can happen with many prescription anti-inflammatory drugs.

Weakness

Many prescription painkillers will have the same lethargic side effects on pets as they do on pets. If this persists after your pet has been taking this medication for a long enough period of time to have gotten used to it, then they may have developed a kidney or liver disease.

Anaphylaxis

If you see your dog is having a difficult time breathing, blue colored mucus, vomiting, diarrhea, and difficulty walking and collapsing after taking medication, take them to the emergency vet immediately. They are having an allergic reaction and need to get an epinephrine shot to live.

Starting off with a lower amount of CBD and then building up to a higher dosage is one of the best ways to gauge whether or not your pet will react well to the medication. The side effects of CBD for animals you should watch out for with CBD is extreme drowsiness, vomiting, and itchiness. The side-effects listed above are more common with prescription medication, though there may be rare occurrences where your dog experiences these from CBD oil as well.

These side effects aren’t reported often, but our pets are like family so being careful is important. It is also important to talk to their vet before taking them off any medication and have a discussion with them to find out what is best for your dog.
